Description
Clarence F. “Bud” Hunter was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., to Clarence D. and Fern Keck and passed away March 16, 2012, in Lake Placid, Fla., where he and his wife, Helen, spent their winters.
Bud graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City Missouri in 1947. He attended the University of Iowa where he participated in football as a freshman and in R.O.T.C. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Bud served in the United States Army as the 1st Lieutenant during the Korean conflict.
Bud sold real estate for about 50 years, and eventually started his own company, Heritage Realtors. When he left Heritage he ventured out and stated a Real estate Appraisal service. Bud owned and operated “Hunter Appraisal Services” located at 1500 2nd Ave SE # 108 in Cedar Rapids.
Bud was a consummate outdoorsman and conservationist and was a founding member of Eastern Iowa Ducks Unlimited serving as their first president. He was the driving force in starting the Green Wing program for young hunters. Bud hunted ducks and geese from Saskatchewan to Arkansas along the Mississippi flyway.
Bud won the Iowa Duck Calling Contest in 1968 and participated in the World Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Ark., the following year. Perhaps his favorite bird to hunt was the wild turkey. He was very successful, bagging his limit nearly every year.
Bud’s wife, Helen, wrote two books using Bud’s hunting prowess as the basis for the stories.
The first book “Duck Hunting with Grandpa” is about a young boy who learns duck hunting skills and techniques, wildlife conservation, and builds warm relationships with his grandfather, and his friends in training hunting dogs, in the duck blind, and at the hunting cabin.
The second book “Turkey Hunting with Grandpa.” Is about an eleven-year-old boy who learns turkey calling, hunting, and relationship building from his grandfather. Rich outdoor experiences, wildlife habits observed, gun safety and conservation are all part of the book
